Sink or Swim by Annika Aguila

I aimlessly wade through murky waters;

The seagulls are desperate for my attention.

I attempt to swim through the noise. But

I forget how to breathe.

I drift away from home.

Roots forgotten

Mother tells me I deserve to feel empty,

as I cycle left and I cycle right,

going nowhere.

Father tells me that I should’ve been

raised differently. He’s never content.

you’re going nowhere.

The light switch between my ears,

running out of batteries.

So now I run on burnt coffee,

fueling the broken batteries

in the back of my neck.
